This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new church year. For the next four weeks, Christians around the world practice waiting for the coming of Christ, watching the sun come up on our salvation.
Given the current state of the world, I feel like my heart needs all the hope practice it can get. For me, this season is an invitation to pause in the darkness and look for the glimmers of the Holy.
Follow your Longing
Before the Christmas rejoicing
It’s quiet in the dark
You feel the earth groaning
But you don’t know where to start
What will it be like when you come back
And we see that
You’re hidden here in everything
Throw out some seeds in the wind
Spring will come and winter will end
The flame has always been
So light your lamp
And follow your longing
Instead of waiting on a memory
We’re harvesting a dream
The grace is given freely
You just have to receive
What will it be like when you come back
And we see that
You’re hidden here in everything
Throw out some seeds in the wind
Spring will come and winter will end
The flame has always been
So light your lamp
And follow your longing
The door to love was never shut
I just don’t think we look hard enough
There’s nothin that the flame doesn’t touch
So light your lamp and follow your longing
Follow your longing
What do you have to lose?
Follow your longing

"There is a quiet light that shines in every heart. It draws no attention to itself, though it is always secretly there. It is what illuminates our minds to see beauty, our desire to seek possibility, and our hearts to love life. ... This shy inner light is what enables us to recognize and receive our very presence here as a blessing. We enter the world as strangers who all at once become heirs to a harvest of memory, spirit, and dream that has long preceded us and will now enfold, nourish, and sustain us." - John O'Donohue, To Bless the Space Between Us

Advent has the best poetry. I like Advent Calendar by Rowan Williams and this by Enuma Okoro https://www.patheos.com/resources/additional-resources/2011/12/advent-poem-enuma-okoro-12-08-2011
I remember seeing you at the rocking horse in Nottingham as Lewis and Leigh, we had 4:19 as one of our songs at our wedding. Really like your new song for advent, good luck with your new project, looking forward to more to come, Beccy, Nottingham
